The “Long Branch Creek” runs through the park while unpaved roads go around it. These roads are used for hiking, biking, and walking pets. There is an open area near the shelter house for tent camping and yard games such as croquet, horseshoes, ladder ball, etc. Some of these can be checked out in the office. There is a pool table, Kick Zone table, and a dart game in the office.
We are conveniently located only a few miles from Kirksville Regional Airport, LaPlata, and the Amtrak Station. If you're looking for recreational areas, we have lakes nearby for swimming, boating, and fishing. This part of the state is also a favorite spot for hunters of whitetail deer and wild turkey, and we have hunters visit us yearly from all over. There are numerous public Mo. Dept. of Conservation areas and the “Thousand Hills State Park” near our park.
We have many off-site attractions in the area. In LaPlata, just 4 miles south on Highway 63 is “The Depot Inn”. They have a Rail Road Museum, an excellent Mexican Restaurant, and a winery. A few miles further, towards the west on Highway 156, you will find a large Amish community with various businesses, including a bakery and a general store.
Kirksville is about 5 miles north on Highway 63 with a population of around 18,000 and is the home to two colleges - Truman State University and A.T. Still University. Kirksville has a large YMCA facility, a municipal swimming pool (open year round), Truman State University Sports Complex, and Kirksville Sports Complex. There are many fine restaurants, museums, antique shops, libraries, theaters, and unique shops to visit. You can also enjoy golf at the two golf courses, one in LaPlata and one in Kirksville.
